Afi Amezado, hailing from Kissehman in the Anumle Electoral Area, has achieved a remarkable feat by
clinching the title of the female junior golfer champion at the 10th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf
Championship held in Lagos, Nigeria. This latest victory underscores the growing prominence of the Awa
Ibraheem Junior Open Golf Championship, establishing itself as one of the premier junior golf events in
Africa.
Competing in the age 14-15 category, Afi Amezado’s triumph not only secured her status as Ghana’s
leading junior golfer but also catapulted her to the top spot in West Africa.
The tournament took place at the Ikeji Golf Club in Lagos, Nigeria, and due to its status as a world-
ranking event by R&A, participants aged 12 to 15 years engaged in 36 holes of golf on Friday, followed
by 18 holes on Saturday. The championship unfolded on the 21st and 22nd of October, 2023.
After a grueling 54 holes, Amezado compiled a gross score of 249, 42 strokes over the course par. This
impressive performance allowed her to secure the first position, earning her the championship trophy
and a scholarship prize of N300,000.00 generously provided by the sponsor, Alhaji (Dr) Awa Ibraheem.
Notably, Afi’s triumph was by a considerable margin, with the second-place winner, Blessing Adah,
recording a score of 294 in contrast to Afi’s 249.
The 10th edition of this R&A-sanctioned and World Golf Ranking championship, hosted by St Andrews,
Scotland, marked a significant milestone as it welcomed foreign teams. Team Ghana, led by Afi
Amezado, made their nation proud by their impressive performance.
The placement of the Achimota Golf Club within the Anumle Electoral Area, coupled with the
commendable initiative from the Achimota Golf Club and the Fafali Organization, offering free access to
their golf facilities for junior golfers, has significantly contributed to these remarkable results.
As Afi prepares for her next challenge, she is set to compete in the qualifiers aiming to represent Ghana
in the forthcoming World Junior Open at St Andrews, Scotland, organized by R&A. We extend our
heartfelt congratulations to Afi for her extraordinary victory.
